UK Asian Women's Centre Wins
National Award!
 
Volunteers from all over the UK were
recognised and praised at the
Nationwide Community and Heritage
Awards ceremony held at the Tower of
London on Tuesday November 11.
 
Eight winners were announced at the
ceremony, which was hosted by BBC
news presenter Nicholas Owen, for
dedicating spare time to supporting
their local communities and heritage.
The ceremony was attended by 147 of
the country’s most dedicated
volunteers who were shortlisted for the
awards.  Over the last 10 years the
awards, which are run by Nationwide
Building Society and the Heritage
Lottery Fund (HLF), have celebrated
the work of over 13,000 volunteers.

UKAWC is a charity based organisation set up over 25 years ago
by Asian women migrating from South
Asian countries. It has since grown and
developed to serve an integral part of
community life in the UK.
 
We encourage Asian women to
participate in the various services we
have on offer. Through this involvement
ladies who may otherwise be socially
isolated are given the opportunity to
engage with like minded individuals
with whom they may share certain
customs, language, values and
attributes. Over this time the group
have built a strong communication
network, where they have developed
friendships with one another and
respect for each others differences.
 
The organisation is run by women who
understand the cultural and language
background and specific needs of
Asian women. We offer advice, support
and training, and all of our services are
free of charge. As a sign of our quality
service to all our clients, we have been
successful in achieving the IAG
standards, Matrix and we work in
partnership with SRB6, Birmingham
City Council, West Midlands Education
Services (WMES) and City College,
Solihull and Sandwell colleges, Institute
Of Asian Businesses (IAB), just to
mention a few.
